Best Defensive Ammo Deals

Updated October 17, 2026

Defensive ammunition is a small box on purpose. Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, Hornady Critical Defense, Hornady Critical Duty, and the other jacketed hollow points people actually carry are sold in 20 and 50 round boxes more often than in cases. A huge percent off a case of FMJ is a range deal. It is not this category. If the title does not say hollow point, JHP, or a known defensive line, do not file it as carry ammo in your head.

Compare grain and cartridge, not just brand. A 124 grain 9mm HST and a 147 grain 9mm HST are sister loads, not identical ones. .380, .45 ACP, and 5.56 defensive loads do not borrow a 9mm price. Price per round is still the right comparison inside one load, and it will look high next to range FMJ. That is the product, not a failed sale.

The 9mm bulk guide is the practice pile. The carry pistol guide is the gun. Live defensive listings, when a retailer has one on sale, are below. The wider list is ammo.

Questions people ask

Why is defensive ammo priced apart from range ammo?

The bullet is built to expand, and the boxes are smaller. A case of FMJ does not tell you whether a hollow point is a deal.

How many rounds is a useful comparison?

Match the round count on the box. A 20-round box and a 50-round box are different listings, so price per round is the fair comparison when the count is printed.
